Human trafficking: NAPTIP rescues 164 victims in 5 months in Kano

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and other Related Matters (NAPTIP), Kano Zonal Command, said it had rescued no fewer than 164 victims of human trafficking in the zone in the past five months.
NAPTIP commander in charge of the zone comprising Kano,Kaduna, Jigawa,Katsina and Bauchi states, Mr Shehu Umar, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Kano that 114 of those rescued were females.

Umar said in one of their important operations, the command rescued 10 victims of human trafficking in a house at Kudundumau village, Abuja.

He said they were rescued following a report of abduction case by Kano State Hisbah Board to the Zonal command, on May 12.

“The state Hisbah Board transferred a case of abduction, where a girl was taken to a house, popularly known as Two Star House in Kudundumau village at Asokoro extension, Abuja.

“Upon the receipt of the case, we went to Abuja for further investigation and were able to rescue 10 female victims and arrested nine youths in connection with the case.” he said.

According to him, six of the victims are from Kano, two from Kaduna while the remaining two are from Nasarawa and Bauchi states.

He said the victims had since been reunited with their families while the house which was being used as a brothel, had been sealed off.

Umar said the command had successfully prosecuted five culprits of human trafficking, out of which four were among the nine suspects arrested in Kudundumau village.

He said the command, in collaboration with a non-governmental organisation, Prisoners Rahabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), had planned to train 30 victims on various trades to enable them sustain themselves.

“The training will be conducted in two segment,s after which the trainees will be empowered,” he said. (NAN)
