There was mayhem at the Delta State Government House Annex, Warri, on Thursday, after an attack by Gunmen left one person dead.
The unnamed attackers stormed the premises around 11:12am when members of the Delta State Waterways Security Committee were holding a meeting, killing a driver attached to the Annex in the process.
According to Punch, the armed men had trailed the driver from one of the new generation banks in the city after he withdrew a large amount of money meant for the officials of the Waterways Committee.
They then opened fire on the vehicle and despite the gunshots wounds, the driver drove into the premises of the Annex where he died before he could be rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The incident reportedly created apprehension among residents of Edjeba community, as security agents attached to the Annex located along the Warri NPA Expressway in Edjeba also scampered to safety during the attack.
Chairman of the committee, Mr Boro Opodu, and his members also fled for safety during the terrifying incident.
“The gunmen reportedly trailed one of our drivers who was sent to cash some money for the Delta State Waterways Security committee who was having a meeting at the Annex,” an eyewitness said.
“We all fled for safety including the security agents because nobody knew what was happening other than sound of gun shots. They entered the Government House with the driver trying to collect the money. We were all afraid.”
Meanwhile, the Chief Press Secretary to the state governor, Mr Charles Ehiedu Aniagwu, said in a telephone chat that it was a mere robbery attack and not an attack on the Government House.
He confirmed the killing of the driver while also disclosing that the robbers could not cart away with the loot as they were eventually nabbed by the authorities.
